About Iyengar Yoga
Iyengar Yoga: Precision, Alignment, and Depth
Iyengar Yoga is a form of Hatha Yoga that emphasizes detail, precision, and alignment in the performance of yoga postures (asanas) and breath control (pranayama). Developed by B.K.S. Iyengar, this method is firmly grounded in the traditional eight limbs of yoga as expounded by Patanjali in his Yoga Sutras.
What Sets Iyengar Yoga Apart?
Precision and Alignment: Iyengar Yoga is renowned for its attention to detail. Practitioners are guided meticulously in the correct alignment of the body in each pose. This precision helps to maximize the physical and mental benefits of the practice while minimizing the risk of injury.
Use of Props: One of the hallmarks of Iyengar Yoga is the innovative use of props such as belts, blocks, and bolsters. These tools assist practitioners of all levels and abilities in achieving the correct postures, enhancing their experience and deepening their practice.
Sequencing: The sequencing of poses in Iyengar Yoga is carefully designed to ensure a balanced practice. This thoughtful approach to structuring classes helps to build strength, flexibility, and stamina gradually and safely.
Therapeutic Benefits: Iyengar Yoga is known for its therapeutic applications. B.K.S. Iyengar himself was a pioneer in using yoga to address specific health conditions, and many Iyengar teachers are trained in these methods. This makes Iyengar Yoga accessible and beneficial for individuals with a wide range of physical abilities and health challenges.
